Terry Smithson, biodiversity manager and ecologist at the consultancy BioScapes, believes it is "important to employ plants and encourage wild animals to thrive in our open up spaces."

He added: "Our favorite is Lonicera periclymenum, which can be grown in a pot or directly in the basis and either intertwined through a trellis or trained forth walls, fences or a pagoda.

"Clusters of cream to orange trumpet-like flowers produce a wonderful odour and provide a valuable food source for bumblebees, moths and other pollinators."

3. Azaleas and hydrangeas

For a display of "long-lasting blooms in bright colors," Phostrogen suggests azaleas and hydrangeas.

The spokesperson said: "Line borders that sit down in dappled sunlight with a diverseness of colors for full effect. Just brand sure that they don't have also much sunlight to scorch, or too little sunlight to prevent flowering."

These are ericaceous plants, which means they "prefer acidic soil with a pH of below six." A specialist fertilizer can provide "much-needed extra iron and the perfect soil conditions to thrive."

Ivy is extremely versatile, according to Smithson, "able to tolerate a wide range of soil conditions and happy in either shaded or sunny positions.

"With self-attaching stems, information technology can be grown upwardly walls or fences and is great for livening up a night corner or hiding an eyesore."

Konyar, who runs web shop Interior Kollection, told Newsweek: "Non everyone has the commitment or even the natural daylight to accommodate live plants. Purchasing artificial plants may be an investment initially, but their lifespan is eternal, maintenance is minimal, and their affect on a room can be magnificent."
